Art Education

What is art?
  •  Art is the way to show your filling through by any medium in canvas that's called art.
  • Art is the process of deliberately arranging items  in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics, and even disciplines such as history and psychology analyze its relationship with humans and generations
  • Art as "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others.
  • Art can also simply refer to the developed and efficient use of a language to convey meaning with immediacy and or depth. Art is an act of expressing feelings, thoughts, and observations. There is an understanding that is reached with the material as a result of handling it, which facilitates one's thought processes.
  • Michelangelo is quoted as saying,"A man paints with his brains and not with his hands."  This quote really sums it up.  You MUST have knowledge in order to create good artwork.

The Principles of Art

The principles of art generally deal with the way the elements of art are composed within the work of art. So, the principles of art typically deal with composition. The principles tend to be more fluid than the elements meaning that opinions vary on what the principles really are.   I suggest that there are eight concrete principles of art, and few others that would be considered art fundamentals.  The eight principles of art are balance, proportion, unity, harmony, variety, emphasis, rhythm,  and movement.  All of these principles clearly deal with the placement of elements within artwork.

Other Fundamentals of Art

There are other art fundamentals other than the elements and principles that every artist should understand and implement. These include, but are not limited to composition, contrast, dominance, content implementation, aesthetics, art criticism, and symbolism.

Composition - The way visual elements are positioned in a work of art.  Composition is highly dependent on the use of the principles of art.

Contrast - refers to difference between elements or subjects within a work of art.  Contrast can be created through variety within the elements of art. (i.e. value, color, texture)  Contrast can used to create a focal point or area of interest in an artwork.

Dominance - refers to one area of a work of art that is visually heavier demanding more attention.  Dominance is closely related to emphasis.
Content- refers to the message or meaning within an artwork.

Aesthetics - refers to the artwork's visual attraction or beauty.

Art Criticism - An organized approach to evaluating artwork.

Symbolism - Using visual objects or arrangements to represent an alternate meaning.

Functional art is art that serves a purpose. A potter who creates tea sets is making functional art.

Non-functional art refers to paintings and such pieces of art that are created to view and contemplate
Art is usually about self-expression because the artist feels strongly enough about what they are doing to try and put it into a form that they, and others, can come to terms with. This product of their self-expression can help others because there will always be people who feel the same way but they cannot express it themselves. These people will identify with the artist and draw encouragement, purpose, and excitement about the thing expressed.
One of the functions of the artist is to make a statement of some kind. It may be a simple statement, the beauty of the landscape for example, but it is a statement. Somehow the artist is trying to communicate an idea, an emotion, or a purpose in their work.
I know there has been that idea around that new art can be created about old art. One would think that there’s enough subject material or ideas in this world to make a statement about, without the need to re-hash that which has already been communicated in other art pieces. I did a painting a couple of years ago that used a statue in a park as a subject. The soldier statue was the true work of art and I just brought it to everybody’s attention again by painting it. I guess in a way I was making a statement about an existing piece of art. Some painters will do paintings of historical buildings or other architecture pieces that stand out as unique and artistic in design. In this way I suppose the artist is making a statement about art itself.
